Chapter Twenty-Two
âWow.â Quack said from within the confines of his backpack. âThat guy was a real ray of sunshine. Whatâs his deal anyway?â
We stepped off the elevator and into the wide hall of the Judas Agency main floor. It was abuzz with agents rushing this way and that, their footsteps and voices echoing off the marbled tile and oversized ceiling. If I didnât know better, I would think we were in an innocuous building full of innocent office workers.
âJudas is known as the Great Betrayer.â Alex spoke just loud enough for me to hear even though Quack would be able to hear her thoughts. âHe betrayed the son of God himself for thirty pieces of silver.â
âActually.â I could not help but amend. âHe was chosen, or one could argue he was the only one trusted enough to carry out the horrible task required for the son of God to fulfill His destiny. He had a job to do, and he did it, no matter the personal cost.â
The words resonated with me, and I could not help but hope I would be strong enough to do the same if I was ever faced with the same sort of choice.
Alex peered up at me with wide surprised eyes. âI had never thought about it that way before.â
I shrugged. âSort of what our little club is based on. Trust me, you donât want that speech from the horseâs mouth. It comes with a lot more yelling and spitting.â
Alex led me through the busy hall and out the front doors to the huge courtyard outside. âI believe you.â
Our circumstances weighed on us as we wandered silently along a path that led us away from the busier parts of the common area. There was a large statue in the middle, an ironic depiction of Judasâs betraying kiss. I wondered if Alex saw it in a different light now as well. A job that had to be done. Judasâs part to save humanity and his reward was to spend eternity here, known for all time as the Great Betrayer.
When we got to the statue, we were far enough out of earshot to avoid being overheard and Alex jumped at the chance to speak.
âWhat are we going to do?â She turned to look up at me, choking out the words as she fought back tears in her eyes. âI canât believe we have to stand by and watch everything happen Topside. And losing you as a partner ... I feel like my whole world is being ripped out from underneath me.â
I reached out and pulled her into my arms. She stiffened at first then relaxed and leaned into me.
âI know what you mean, believe me.â
I held her for several moments, then let her go, stepping back so I could peer into her eyes.
âHey.â I wiped the tears from her cheeks. âWhatever happens, Iâm always here for you.â
âI know.â She let out a big breath. âAnd Iâm here for you. I mean someone has to keep you from killing yourself all the time.
